Finding Relief and Restoring Balance

Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine, which can start as a postural distortion but become a permanent deformity if left untreated. The condition may originate from three factors—congenital (genetic predisposition), habitual (behavioral routines), or idiopathic (unknown cause).

Chiropractic can play a crucial role in diagnosing and helping with scoliosis. At Evolved Chiropractic, we provide hope with our caring team, personalized care plans, and thorough evaluations.

Parents may notice obvious signs of scoliosis in their child, such as a high shoulder or low hip that affects clothing fit. Uneven shoe wear can also serve as a clue. However, don’t dismiss back and leg discomforts experienced by children as “growing pains.” They might be signs of scoliosis as well.

Chiropractic adjustments help improve the structure and function of the spine, leading to better posture for children with scoliosis. They also strengthen and retrain muscles, further enhancing overall posture. If you suspect your child may have scoliosis, we strongly recommend you bring them in for an evaluation from Dr. Jon. He has worked with many cases and may be able to help your child as well.

Many parents are concerned about how heavy their child’s backpack is and the strain they put on the spine. While a definite concern, heavy book bags do not cause scoliosis directly. To prevent undue stress, parents should ensure their child uses both shoulder straps and that the bag’s weight does not exceed 10-15% of their body weight.

The process begins with a comprehensive examination, including INSiGHT™ scans and X-rays. These scans help Dr. Jon assess the degree of curvature and function of the nervous system. Based on the analysis, we develop a customized care plan for the patient. Regular adjustments and, if necessary, recommended stretches and exercises at home are part of our holistic approach to scoliosis treatment.

Dr. Jon employs various techniques to address these abnormal curvatures of the spine. The Diversified Technique has been one of the most successful in modifying the spinal curve. He aims to alleviate discomfort and prevent further progression of scoliosis by using specific adjustments on designated spine segments.

When it comes to relief, patients may experience improvements within as little as one week. While physically changing and reducing the degree of curvature is uncommon, our care focuses on preventing the condition from worsening and maintaining spinal
functionality to enhance the patient’s quality of life.

Regardless of age, early intervention and ongoing care help manage and minimize the effects of scoliosis. The primary goal is always to avoid surgery whenever possible.

If left untreated, the spinal curve can worsen over time, potentially leading to the need for braces or even surgery. Severe cases may require unsightly or cumbersome braces, while surgery involves attaching steel rods to force the spine to straighten. Our natural approach using chiropractic adjustments offers a natural and holistic alternative.

Knowing When to Seek Care

Contrary to popular belief, any sideways curvature in the spine is considered abnormal. A healthy spine should appear straight from the back. Scoliosis typically involves two curves—a primary curve in one direction and a compensatory curve in the opposite direction.

While opinions differ on when scoliosis requires care, the consensus among surgeons is that surgery should be considered when the spinal curvature reaches or exceeds 40 degrees. For smaller curves (between 10-25 degrees), immediate care may not be necessary.

Finding Healing

One patient had scoliosis in her mid-back, leading to frequent migraines from the resulting stress on her spine and nervous system. After over three years of slight relief, she switched to our care from another chiropractor and experienced remarkable changes.

Within a few weeks of starting care, the woman’s back pain disappeared entirely, and her migraines significantly reduced in frequency. She expressed her gratitude, stating, “You have done more for me in a few weeks than the last guy did in three years!” She continues to receive regular wellness care to maintain her newfound health and well-being.
