Chiropractic Care for Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Adjusting childIf your child is experiencing sensory processing issues, ADHD, autism, anxiety, or developmental delays, Dr. Jon Mudlaff is here to help. He has a special place in his heart for his youngest patients. He finds this his most rewarding work—having an impact on kids that will last for their lifetimes.

As a neurologically focused chiropractor, Dr. Jon works to understand the balance of each young patient’s nervous system, and whether it’s more sympathetic—known as the fight-or-flight mode, or if it leans toward the parasympathetic nervous system, which allows us to heal and function naturally.

If there is an imbalance and the sympathetic side is dominant, this can present as sensory processing difficulties and developmental delays—issues many of our kids face these days.

Chiropractic Care for Sensory Processing, ADHD, Autism and Anxiety

When a child has misalignments, or subluxations, it can create an altered perception of the world around them. This abnormal sensory input can create an abnormal output, which can lead to an eventual medical diagnosis of ADHD, autism, and anxiety. What we find most commonly with these children is that they’re stuck in the fight-or-flight loop.

Through chiropractic adjustments, Dr. Jon brings the nervous system back into alignment, so the child’s other bodily systems can communicate and respond effectively to the nervous system and the world around them—in a healthier way.

Chiropractic Care for Developmental Delays

If you’ve noticed your child has developmental delays, either speech or mobility related, it may be an underlying misalignment that disrupts their perception. By correcting these subluxations and getting the stress and interference out of the nervous system, it allows them to process that information more efficiently and produces a more desirable output.

In turn, this improves how their systems respond and can improve their developmental growth.

Dr. Jon’s Technology-Based Approach

When Dr. Jon sees children with neurodevelopmental disorders, he starts his investigation at the moment they were born, to get to the bottom of any stressors or incidents that may have caused misalignment in the nervous system.

From there, Dr. Jon will scan the child with the latest noninvasive, chiropractic technology, which uses heart rate variability (HRV), thermal indications, and electromyography (EMG) scans.

This is a measure of the variability between each heartbeat, which can indicate how balanced or unbalanced the nervous system is. When the fight-or-flight response is constantly active, it can cause a sympathetic dominant nervous system to be overactive. Individuals who have their sympathetic system or stress response stuck on are susceptible to inflammation, a weakened immune system, and lowered adaptability to stress.

This testing measures skin temperature differences on each side of your spine. Signs of temperature differences indicate areas of dysfunction and stress within the nervous system, which can affect the health and function of your body’s organs and glands. The test helps us to determine which organs may be affected and the severity of the stress.

This device measures energy output by analyzing the spinal muscles and nerve activity along the neurospinal system. An EMG can show signs of abnormal energy expenditure and organization of the system. High amounts of energy expenditure and disorganization are commonly seen in adults and kids with ADD/ADHD, anxiety, stress, autism, and other sensory processing disorders.

Based on these scans, as well as what Dr. Jon garners from the patient’s specific history, he can put together an individualized, comprehensive care plan for the child.

How Adjustments Can Help

Following the scans, Dr. Jon will adjust the child with confidence, knowing that he’s applying the correct adjustments in the correct places to allow that nervous system to unwind itself and let go of the stresses built up within the neuro-spinal system. Once it’s back to working order, it will allow for better function throughout the body and allow them to respond to the environment in a more regulated manner.

If a child is sensitive to touch and new faces, Dr. Jon can adjust them wherever they are most comfortable, from his table to snuggled in Mom or Dad’s arms, or even in the waiting area if they’re not comfortable entering the adjusting room.

It’s important to take the time to make kids comfortable, so the adjustment, when it happens, occurs in the best possible way for the child. Taking our time will always pay great dividends: when we’ve restored the proper brain-body connection within the child, they can function at their best.

The Perfect Storm Workshops

So many times, we take our kids to our primary provider with concerns regarding their feeding and sleeping habits, behavioral tendencies, mobility concerns, and even stressful disruptions like GI and digestion issues and colic—only to be told our child will just have to grow out of it.

Not only is this incredibly frustrating, it’s also not always accurate, and in fact—the opposite can happen.

During the Perfect Storm Workshops, Dr. Jon will connect the dots for parents and explain how it all begins with the health of our nervous system. If our bodies are stuck in stress response, growth and development throughout the nervous system cannot take place and can snowball, affecting our children’s behavior and emotions, and promoting an environment conducive to complications like anxiety, sensory issues, and ADHD.

There’s a better path forward for your child and the family, and these workshops are the perfect place to learn more and feel supported.
