Finding Relief and Restoring Quality of Life

person with headacheThrobbing, a dull ache, or sudden pain, or the infamous “brain freeze” after indulging in ice cream—headaches come in various forms and intensities, affecting people worldwide. This prevalent discomfort can range from mildly uncomfortable to debilitating, causing time loss from school or work.

In some cases, frequent headaches can even impact mental health, leading to anxiety or depression. Understanding the different types of headaches is crucial in finding effective relief and restoring quality of life.

Headaches—Types, Impact, and Symptoms

There are two classifications of headaches—primary and secondary. Primary headaches are stand-alone conditions not associated with any other medical condition. Within this category, we find four main types of headaches:

  • Cluster Headaches: these intense, excruciating headaches occur in cyclical patterns or clusters. It is often characterized by severe pain behind or around one eye and accompanied by redness, tearing, and nasal congestion on the affected side. While the exact cause of cluster headaches is still unknown, chiropractic care helps manage the discomfort associated with these episodes.
  • Migraines: a recurrent headache characterized by moderate to severe throbbing, usually on one side of the head. Migraines often present additional symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, and visual disturbances. By addressing underlying spinal issues, our adjustments have shown promise in reducing the frequency and intensity of migraines.
  • Tension Headaches: the most common type of headache. Typically manifests as a dull, ache or pressure around the temples or back of the head. Stress, poor posture, and muscle tension in the neck and upper back often contribute to tension headaches. Our targeted care provides effective relief for this type of headache.
  • New Daily Persistent Headaches (NDPH): these headaches begin suddenly and persist for an extended period, typically at least three months. They are constant and unrelenting, often leading to significant distress and impairment in daily functioning. While we don’t know the exact cause of NDPH, we can offer symptom relief and improve overall well-being.

Secondary Headaches—Addressing Underlying Causes

Secondary headaches are linked to underlying medical conditions or external factors. Some common causes of secondary headaches include head injuries, high blood pressure, infections, medication overuse, sinus congestion, trauma, and even tumors. Our team addresses the root cause using chiropractic techniques that can complement other medical care and help manage associated discomfort.

Certain foods can also trigger or exacerbate headaches in some individuals. To help identify which foods could contribute to your discomfort, we recommend that patients undergo allergy testing. By eliminating trigger foods from your diet, you may experience significant relief from headache symptoms.

The Path to Relief

At Evolved Chiropractic, we offer a non-invasive, drug-free approach to managing and alleviating headaches and migraines. We focus on the spine and its connection to the nervous system to identify and address misalignments and dysfunctions that may contribute to headaches.

Diversified adjustments to the cervical spine and occiput have successfully managed tension headaches and those originating from the neck area. Our gentle realignments restore proper nervous system function, reducing headache frequency, intensity, and duration.

While every individual is unique, many patients often notice a decrease in headache intensity or frequency after just a few visits. Most patients typically report significant improvement and relief from their headaches within 2-3 weeks of consistent care.
